Fantasy Names

About This Site

Fantasy Name Generator is a free tool for naming fictional characters, places, and worlds. Each result pairs a composed name with a creative meaning, so you can use it as a starting point for a character detail, a location, or a story.

The site operator and contact is Luca Urti. For questions about the project, errors, or privacy, email urti.luca@gmail.com or visit the contact page.

How a name is built

The main name combines an opener and an ending from stored element sets. The character dataset currently contains 272 openers and 255 endings across 21 cultural inspiration sets and a mixed Other set. Separate datasets support fantasy races, places, and science fiction. Optional surnames and titles use additional stored sets.

The generator selects elements according to the available filters and joins their text. If the same consonant appears on both sides of the join, the joining rule removes one copy. It does not otherwise check that the result follows a real language’s grammar or that every combination is easy to pronounce.

A result’s meaning joins the two elements’ stored glosses in the same order. Results also show the exact elements used. The name meanings reference lets you inspect the character elements. The generation code selects from stored data; it does not ask a language-model service to compose a new name when you press the button.

Pronunciation hints use spelling rules. They are suggestions for saying fictional names aloud, not dictionary entries or verified transcriptions. You can choose a different pronunciation for your own setting.

What the labels mean

A meaning is a creative gloss assigned to the fragments, not a verified translation of the finished name. Combining two meaningful-looking fragments does not establish an authentic personal name, an etymology, or a grammatically valid word.

Inspiration labels identify the site’s element sets and their intended influences. They do not certify a name’s nationality, ancestry, or historical use. Some labels cover broad or overlapping traditions. The data is a limited creative resource, not a representation of every naming practice in a community.

Gender labels organize the available endings in the tool. They are not a claim about every use of a name or about the identity of a real person who may share it. You can use the results in whatever way fits your fictional setting.

Editorial approach and AI assistance

The naming guides and portions of the explanatory copy have been revised with AI assistance. The guides are published under the Fantasy Name Generator name. They offer creative-writing exercises and suggestions, rather than personal reports of tabletop experience or scholarly research.

Examples invented for a guide are labelled as fictional exercises. Examples presented as generator output should follow the site’s stored elements and joining rules. The current element data does not include a source citation for each fragment, so it should not be used as an independently verified language reference.

Article pages distinguish their original publication date from their latest substantive revision. Luca Urti is the contact for editorial questions and correction requests; the author label does not imply that each revised sentence was personally written or reviewed by a language specialist.

How to check a result before using it

Say the name aloud, compare it with the other names in your cast, and decide whether its suggested meaning contributes something useful. If you change the spelling or meaning, record that as your own version.

A composed name may coincide with an existing word, person’s name, fictional character, or brand. The tool does not perform clearance checks or guarantee uniqueness. Where cultural accuracy or publication rights matter to your project, make the relevant checks independently. See the terms for the site’s conditions and limitations.

Report a correction

Send the page URL, the name or fragment involved, and a short explanation of the issue through the contact page. A reliable source or suggested correction is helpful, particularly for a claim about a real language.

It helps to distinguish a wrong stored gloss, an awkward combination, and an error in the explanatory text. They have different fixes. Updating an element can affect several tool pages and examples, while an article correction may affect only that article.
