Fantasy Name Meanings

Every name this site generates is two fragments joined together, and each fragment carries its own meaning. This page lists 20 universal openers, the 126 origin-specific openers and 126 endings across 21 cultural origins — so you can look up what any generated name means, or build one deliberately from the meaning you want.

Read a name left to right. The opener supplies the descriptive element, the ending supplies the noun or the role. Ironamun is Iron (“unyielding”) plus -amun (“hidden one”), so it reads as “unyielding hidden one”. Astrathea is Astra (“star”) plus -thea (“goddess”) — “star goddess”.

One caveat that matters if you intend to publish the name: these meanings describe the fragments, not the finished word. A composed name is fiction. It is not a verified translation, and it is not an attested historical name in the language its fragments came from.

Open the generator to produce names from these elements, or read on for the full tables.

Universal Name Openers and Their Meanings

These 20 openers are used when no cultural origin is selected. They are English-derived elements chosen for imagery rather than etymology, which is why they combine readably with an ending from any tradition.

Name Elements by Cultural Origin

Selecting an origin draws both halves of the name from that tradition’s own elements, so the result reads as one language instead of a hybrid. Endings are marked with the gender they conventionally carry.

Fantasy Name Meanings: Common Questions

What does a fantasy name meaning actually describe?

It describes the two fragments the name was built from, not a translation of the finished word. “Yukihana” is listed as “snow flower” because Yuki- is the snow opener and -hana is the flower ending. The joined word is a fictional composition; it is not an attested Japanese name and should not be presented as one.

How do I work out the meaning of a name from this generator?

Split it into its two halves and look each half up in the tables below. Openers carry the descriptive element (Frost, Shadow, Kori) and endings carry the noun or role (-wyn, -coatl, -inti). Read them in order: opener first, ending second. Ironamun is Iron (unyielding) plus -amun (hidden one) — “unyielding hidden one”.

Why do endings have a gender but openers do not?

In most of the naming traditions these sets draw on, the grammatical gender of a name sits in its ending — Latin -us against -a, Greek -andros against -thea, Celtic -wyn against -wen. The opener stays neutral, so a single opener can start a masculine, feminine or neutral name depending only on what you attach to it.

How many different fantasy names can these elements produce?

About 3,336 character names, before the separate race, place, title and science-fiction datasets are counted. That figure is lower than multiplying every opener by every ending, because selecting a cultural origin restricts both halves to that origin's own elements — you trade combinations for names that read as one language.

Can I use these name elements in my own work?

Yes. The elements and the names you build from them are free to use, including commercially. Because a composed name can coincide with an existing name or trademark, check availability before you attach one to a published product.
