About the Fantasy Surname Generator

A surname tells the people in a story where someone belongs before they have said a word. This generator has two sets. Family names join an image such as Stone, Hawk or Frost to an ending such as -wood, -forge or -ward, so they read like a trade, a place or a habit: Stoneforge, Hawkshield, Frostbrook. Clan names join words such as Deep, Rune or Oath to endings such as -hammer, -crest or -binder, so they read like a house with a history: Deephammer, Runecrest, Oathbinder.

Each fragment carries a creative gloss from this tool. Stone is labelled enduring and -forge smith, so Stoneforge reads "Enduring smith". Use the gloss to decide what the family is known for, or what it used to be known for.

Decide what the surname records

Fantasy surnames usually record one of four things: a trade (Stoneforge), a place (Oakbrook), a deed (Wolfbane) or an allegiance (Oathbinder). Pick the category first, then generate until the result fits it. A village full of trade names feels settled and practical; a court full of deed names feels proud and dangerous.

Mixing the categories is fine as long as it means something. The one family in town with a deed name instead of a trade name is a story the players will ask about.

Let the name and the person disagree

The most useful surnames are slightly wrong for the person carrying them. A Stoneforge who has never held a hammer, or a Hawkshield who is short-sighted, gives you a line of dialogue and a family expectation in one go.

Decide whether the character is proud of the name, embarrassed by it or trying to earn it. That choice tells you how they introduce themselves, and whether they use the surname at all.

Keep first name and surname from competing

A long, ornate first name followed by a long surname is hard to say and harder to remember. Pair a two-syllable first name with a compound surname, or the other way round, and test the full name in a sentence: "Ask Mira Deephammer about the toll."

Watch for repeated sounds across the join. If the first name ends with the same sound the surname starts with, the names run together when spoken. The Cast Name Checker on this site will also show when two families in your setting have surnames that are too alike.

Inside the Surname Name Set

Compare these family and clan names before you attach one to a character. A Family name reads like a trade or a place; a Clan name reads like a house with a history. The glosses are this tool's creative labels, not the history of a real surname.

Every Element in the Surname Set

These are all the fragments this page combines. Choose a meaning you want first, then look for the opener and ending that carry it. The generator joins them with two spelling rules: a consonant repeated across the join is written once, and pairs that would put the same vowel twice at the join are left out.
