About the Gnome Name Generator
The Gnome set is built for quick, bright names that still sound good the tenth time a player says them: short openers such as Tink-, Pip- and Wex- joined to playful endings like -wick, -ble and -etta. Use it for inventors, illusionists, burrow-dwellers or a family that sells clockwork toys at the market.
Every fragment carries a creative gloss from this tool. Tink is labelled clever and -wick lamp, so Tinkwick reads as "Clever lamp". Treat the label as a prompt for one character detail, not as a word from an official Gnomish language.
Let the name describe a reputation
Gnome names in many campaigns sound like nicknames, and that is useful. Quillri, labelled scribe riddle, suits an archivist who answers every question with another question. Kesknock, cog and notch, suits a clockmaker who marks every repaired gear with a small notch.
Decide whether the name was given at birth or earned later. A name that started as a joke and stuck is a story you can tell in one line of dialogue, and it tells the players something about the people who use it.
Build a workshop of four
Generate a batch and pick four names for one workshop: the founder, an apprentice, a rival and a customer who never pays. Bramble (burrow + tinker) fits a founder who dug the workshop under a hill. Pipkin (seed + little one) fits the apprentice. Wexgrin (spark + grin) is the rival who copies every invention, and Mirthott (merry + button) is the customer.
Read the four names aloud together. They differ in opening and length, so nobody will mix them up. If two of your picks share an opener, swap one, or paste the list into the Cast Name Checker on this site to find such pairs.
Keep the whimsy under control
Playful names can undercut a serious moment. If a gnome character carries grief or guilt, choose a quieter pairing such as Lumnim (lantern + whisper) and save the bouncier forms for comic minor characters.
A good test: say the name in the saddest line the character might have. If the table laughs, keep the name for someone else.
Inside the Gnome Name Set
Compare these invented constructions for your cast. Pick two similar names for related characters, then a contrasting one for a newcomer. The glosses belong to this tool, not an official fantasy language. Results can resemble names from existing fiction; they are not checked for rights or exclusivity.

Every Element in the Gnome Set
These are all the fragments this page combines. Choose a meaning you want first, then look for the opener and ending that carry it. The generator joins them with two spelling rules: a consonant repeated across the join is written once, and pairs that would put the same vowel twice at the join are left out.
